Beef Expo
at Milwaukee, WI continues to be a major activity of the association, providing
members a venue where their finest Belted Galloways are evaluated by knowledgeable
judges. Unique to our show is the inclusion of Belted Galloway steer classes,
to promote the meat opportunity derived from raising Belties.
Exhibitors are
primarily small breeders, bringing one to four animals per farm. Interestingly,
some are coming not because they think their animals are best, but to be
a part of the 'show scene' before and after the actual show. With the huge
amount of work and expense in showing, that's a great testimonial to everyone
participating.
Because we recognize
that the future and growth of our breed rests with our youth we consider
our junior members to be an integral part of our Belted Galloway show.
Each year special Junior Showmanship classes are held and over the years
participation in these classes has continued to grow. The exuberancy and
enthusiasm of these young showmen infects all participants and contributes
to making the World Beef Expo an enjoyable experience for all.
GLBGA
began a Spring Field
Day when
Expo moved from a spring to fall date, to welcome the rites of spring such
as baby Belties and connecting with old and new Beltie friends. Unlike
our other promotional activities, this event is held at a member's farm.
It is also a day emphasizing EDUCATION. Several topics and/or demonstrations
are selected for each field day. Individual sessions are relatively short
in duration, with unlimited audience participation during and after each
presentation. The ever-popular section, Ask the Vet (or sometimes, Stump
the Vet!) never fails to bring gales of laughter. With a chance to get
free professional opinions and advice, the supply of questions has never
been a problem. And with lunch and fellowship added, the day is an exceptional
annual opportunity to further promote the breed.
Exhibits.
In between Spring Field Day and the fall World Beef Expo, representative
GLBGA members continue to promote our Belted Galloways. The annual list
of exhibits includes the Michigan Beef Expo; the Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin
State Fairs; and Wisconsin Farm Technology Days.
Numerous members,
but especially juniors, promote Belted Galloways at their local fairs.
The increasing number of junior showmen confirms that GLBGA juniors are
excellent Beltie promoters.
We welcome new
members to our Association.
