I want you to know
how Sholtey’s Beef & Bees has come about. It started some 25 years
ago when Larry started raising a few bees. Twenty-five years later, there
were some 200 colonies to play with. Then we retired from education. Larry
was a principal in the high school, and I was an elementary teacher. We
have always been around young people and they are our future.
In 1996 we sold a
beautiful home on Lake Michigan and moved up the road two miles to a 40-acre
farm. They had previously had horses there, some fences and a rundown barn.
We began a long tedious job of rebuilding everything, and deciding what
to put in those fields. The answer came soon after seeing the Belted Galloway
cattle. We started out with a bred cow and two calves.
Our first calf was
born here on the farm just ten days after our Coleen arrived, a beautiful
black belted bull. We have been hooked on these animals since the first
day they arrived. We met the Kellenbergers from Jackson soon after and
they asked us to come to the World Beef Expo that year. That did
it. We knew from that day on what our goal was going to be. We didn’t want
to raise hamburger, but wanted high quality breeding stock to promote the
breed. It took another couple of years to get the great bull we now have.
We bought Anderson Hill Quadruler in 1999, and he has helped produce some
real nice cattle.
Never
did we expect the great things that have happened to us when we started
all this. In 2001, Quadruler was Grand Champion Bull at World Beef Expo,
and our Sholtey’s B&B Josie was Reserve Champion. In 2002, our calf
Lindy was Grand Champion Overall at our West Michgan Fair, shown by our
grandson Jacob. His sister showed Lily and she was second in her class.
We returned to World Beef Expo in 2002 and Josie with her first calf at
her side took Reserve Female again.
Our farm has become
the place to ride by just to watch the calves playing next to the road
in the field north of our house. One of our major campgrounds has us listed
in 'places to see' while in Ludington. We have met so many nice people
who have come to our door asking if it is all right for them to photograph
our animals. We try any way possible to promote this beautiful breed of
cattle.
Each
spring, the first weekend in April, we have cattle on exhibit at the Michigan
Beef Expo at East Lansing, MI. There aren’t enough of us for a show, but
we do show them what Belties are all about.
The Belted Galloways
have made a huge difference in our retirement life. It really gives you
a reason to get out there in the morning and make sure everyone is okay.
They have become our life. Just ask anyone who has bought any of our cattle!
We spoil them rotten. Each year we do have three or four animals for sale
and we welcome visitors any time. We would love to hear from you. You can
contact us at the address above.
